Sickness absence at highest level in years: flu and stress are the main culprits

It’s not just the flu that causes sick leave. Occupational health services are now seeing that stress-related issues are now a significant cause of long-term absenteeism. “Employees who are absent from work due to this are on average unable to work fully for more than eight months, and burnout often lasts even longer,” say ArboNed and HumanCapitalCare.

Recognize signals earlier

According to ArboNed, the solution lies primarily in prevention. Employers should intervene sooner when signs of overload arise. “Employers can make a significant difference by regularly asking how things are really going, making workload a topic of discussion, and providing flexibility in tasks or scheduling where necessary,” the organization states.

Changes in your personal life or at work can sometimes cause unexpectedly high levels of stress.  You might notice you’re sleeping worse, becoming more irritable, or reacting emotionally. These are signs that you may be at risk for overwork or even burnout.
As a manager, you can also present the stress test to employees and then initiate a discussion.
